Gaye Abandon and I just returned from a trip to the 1860s and the "Western" reaches of the Civil War. Oops, sorry, to you Southerners out there: "The War of Northern Agression"! Over 130 of our fellow SASS members were led (loosely) by Ellsworth T. Kincaid; his bride, Lady Stetson; and SASS's irrepressible envoys; Tex (SASS #4) and his lovely wife,Cat Ballou (SASS#55) , aboard the Sternwheel River Steamboat "Delta Queen". Boarding in Chattanooga Tennessee, we sojourned up and around the Tennessee, Ohio and Cumberland Rivers, stopping at Decatur AL, Savannah TN, Paducah KY, Dover TN, and finally Nashville. The entire time, all the SASS members remained dressed in period-correct clothing, both on the excursions ashore and while on the boat. On those days that we toured the battlefields, uniforms of both blue and gray were broken out and worn by those having them. It was the first time that I'd ever seen THREE Confederate Generals at one time, one of them from NEW ZEALAND! Our tours were conducted by James L. Robertson, author of several books on the C/W and also a consultant on the movie "Gods and Generals", along with Richard McMurry, author of "John Bell Hood and the War for Southern Independence" and "Two Great Rebel Armies". Both lecturers were outstanding as was Steve Alexander, who "lives the life" of George Armstrong Custer, also aboard the Delta Queen. 30 of us also took a three-day pre-cruise tour of Chattanooga, also led by Tex, Cat, Ellsworth and Lady Stetson.
